All our lawyers have come from large and leading firms and businesses. We offer a City of London service, and regularly find the top City firms opposite us. We are frequently instructed on matters that would normally be dealt with by such firms.
We demerged from Reed Smith, a top 15 global firm, at the end of 2008 and inherited systems and procedures normally found in such firms, but our origins go back to 1989 when a longstanding client, Courtaulds Plc, outsourced part of its legal department to our then firm. This shaped our culture and one of our key beliefs; that all our lawyers should think of themselves as business people, not remote professionals, we strive to understand and empathise with the business world. We have almost no hierarchy and ask and encourage all our lawyers to work closely with our clients and contribute to the management and promotion of the firm.
Our clients (and our lawyers) stay with us for many years. We get to understand their businesses, their expectations and their foibles. We are quick, nimble and very proactive to the needs of our clients. We work in small teams and decisions can be taken with the least fuss. We are told that we are also fun and easy to work with. Close-knit teams across clients and their Lawyers almost always deliver the best results.
We do not believe in large teams of lawyers working on cases: this just generates duplication and extra cost. Sometimes there is a need for, and we can provide, a pyramid team structure on very large and heavy matters.
We are very international in outlook. Well over 80% of our work is generated by companies who have their head offices outside the UK.
